A horrifying facial wound suffered by the Turkish lieutenant Mustafa Ipar, who was hit by shrapnel from an exploding enemy artillery shell during a battle somewhere in the Dardenelles. Along with the destruction of his face, Lieutenant Ipar lost one of his eyes as well as the ability to speak, and he could only eat liquefied food.

With help from the International Red Cross, Lieutenant Ipar was operated on in Turkey and then later he was brought to Berlin for additional surgeries at the hands of plastic surgeon Jacques Joseph. Though Joseph was talented at his job, the wounds Ipar suffered were just too serious and the surgeries were only moderately successful in reparing his face. Ipar later returned to Turkey with a new face that was not a normal sight, but a face nevertheless.
